Staff Childhood Favorites Pt. 1

We asked the staff of Lee Memorial Library and a few Board of Trustees to give us their top two children’s books, books that they either read when they were young or shared with their children. See what surprising picks they have set out for you! Marcia’s Top Two Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss Green Eggs and Ham is a best-selling and critically acclaimed children’s book by Dr. Seuss, first published on August 12, 1960. As of 2001, according to Publishers Weekly, it was the fourth best-selling English-language children’s book of all time. Key to the Treasure by Peggy Parish While spending the summer on their grandparents’ farm, Liza, Bill, and Ted unravel a series of coded clues that solve a family mystery. Veronica’s Top Two The Jolly Postman, or Other People’s Letters by Janet and Allan Ahlberg The Jolly Postman goes from home to home in a fairy-tale kingdom, delivering letters to Goldilocks, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, and other well-known characters. The Magician’s Nephew by C.S. Lewis When Digory and Polly try to return the wicked witch Jadis to her own world, the magic gets mixed up and they all land in Narnia where they witness Aslan blessing the animals with human speech. Anna’s Top Two Finn Family Moomintroll by Tove Jansson Moomintroll, Sniff and Snufkin discover a Magician’s Hat on a mountain-top, unaware of its strange powers. Once they find out it can transform anything into anything else, their adventure begins. Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick Having lost his mother and his hearing in a short time, twelve-year-old Ben leaves his Minnesota home in 1977 to seek the father he never knew in New York City, and meets there Rose, who is also longing for something missing from her life. Ben’s story is told in words; Rose’s in pictures. Josh’s Top Two Star Wars: Jedi Apprentice Series Follow the adventures and education of thirteen-year-old Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn as they travel across the galaxy as guardians of peace. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling Rescued from the outrageous neglect of his aunt and uncle, a young boy with a great destiny proves his worth while attending Hogwarts School for Wizards and Witches. Lorraine’s Top Two The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka The wolf gives his own outlandish version of what really happened when he tangled with the three little pigs. Upchuck and Rotten Willy by Bill Wallace His happy life disintegrating when his human goes to college and his best friend moves away, Chuck the cat ventures farther and farther into the neighborhood and meets Rotten Willy, a monster-sized and big-hearted dog. Hannah’s Top Two No, David! by David Shannon A young boy is depicted doing a variety of naughty things for which he is repeatedly admonished, but finally he gets a hug. Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren Escapades of a lucky little girl who lives with a horse and a monkey–but without any parents–at the edge of a Swedish village....
